NRI Real Estate Investment in India – A Quick Guide

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are permitted to purchase specific types of properties in India under the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). While residential and commercial properties can be freely purchased, agricultural land, plantation property, and farmhouses are restricted and require prior approval from RBI.

Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) are treated the same as NRIs for property investments. The RBI has granted general permission for NRIs to invest in residential and commercial real estate.
